NVIDIA Announces New Technology for Digital Twin Simulation and Communications within the Metaverse

NVIDIA is one of the companies leading the charge in showing how the metaverse can be used for business. In a recent press conference, NVIDIA CEO and founder Jensen Huang announced several important updates for the company, including new products. While many of these products won’t be commercially available until later this year, these products are sure to change how many companies incorporate virtual reality into their business models. Many of these products have to do with “digital twins,” where a real-life company location is created in a virtual environment and then tested using simulations. This allows company executives to calculate resources as well as see how the supply chain or manufacturing process would work in a real-time simulation. In order to make these simulations accessible and easy to create, NVIDIA will be releasing next-level technology that their clients can use to translate their business into the metaverse.

Omniverse Cloud

As part of the press conference, CEO Huang announced the launch of NVIDIA’s Omniverse Cloud product. The Omniverse Cloud offers a suite of cloud services, making it easier for designers, developers, artists, and creators to collaborate to build metaverse structures. Part of the Omniverse Cloud is a one-click sharing tool manned Nucleus Cloud, where users can share and edit 3D scenes together without having to transfer massive files. The Omniverse Cloud also offers an app called View, for non-technical viewers to stream Omniverse scenes for simulations, using the GeForce Now platform. “Factory planners work inside a digital twin of the real plant to design a new production flow,” stated Huang. “Software engineers test a new software build on the digital twin of a self-driving car before releasing to the fleet. A new wave of work is coming that can only be done in virtual worlds. Omniverse Cloud will connect tens of millions of designers and creators, and billions of future AIs and robotic systems.”

The OVX Platform

In order to power its digital twin simulations, NVIDIA is also launching its OVX computing system. This system is one-of-a-kind, with precision timing, high-speed storage access, and high-performance technology. Using the OVX, the company can create real-world accurate digital twins with real-life simulations. For NVIDIA’s many partners, including Lowe’s, Kroger, and Amazon’s robotics department, having real-time simulations of factories or manufacturing can help optimize efficiency and find areas to cut back on. According to Bob Pette, the VP of Professional Visualization: “Digital twins will change how every industry and company plans. The OVX portfolio of systems will be able to power true, real-time, always-synchronous, industrial-scale digital twins across industries.” For some companies, like Amazon, NVIDIA’s digital twin system can even help Amazon to better train their robots in their many factories.

Introducing Maxine

NVIDIA is also using the power of the cloud to create its own avatar-based video communications platform, called Maxine. While Maxine is not designed to replace other communications platforms like Zoom, its AI features help to lower the bandwidth requirement while optimizing performance using data from a user’s expressions. The company is hopeful that the Maxine platform can help boost communications across the metaverse.

Many other companies are looking to find ways to translate business into the metaverse, as big corporations are creating new virtual locations. Because NVIDIA believes that their biggest growth will be in the Omniverse, it is not surprising that they are releasing next-level technology for this industry. In using tools like the Cloud or AI, the company has helped to stand out when it comes to metaverse platforms. As Richard Kerris, VP of Omniverse at NVIDIA explained: “Virtual worlds are essential for the next level of AI.”
